Fractional consulting works best when the mandate is precise. It is not simply a part-time version of a permanent role. It is focused, senior support brought in to help an organisation move a defined priority forward.

Start with the outcome

Before choosing a person or a method, be clear about the outcome. Is the organisation trying to stabilise delivery, define a change, improve decision-making or turn an unclear problem into an executable plan? A useful mandate names the result, the boundaries and the people who need to be involved.

Make evidence part of the work

Good business analysis and business data analysis connect requirements, operational reality and evidence. Data should sharpen the questions—not replace judgement. Assumptions, definitions and limitations need to be visible so that decisions can be revisited as new information appears.

Define decision rights

Fractional support can lose momentum when nobody is sure who decides. Agree the sponsor, the working group, the escalation route and the decisions the consultant can make. This creates pace without creating confusion.

Leave capability behind

The best engagement does more than produce a document. It leaves clearer priorities, stronger analysis and practical ways of working that the organisation can continue to use.

Majury Change Management supports organisations with fractional consulting, business analysis and business data analysis across Scotland and the wider UK.
